Across the borders financing the world's railways in the nineteenth and twentieth centries par Dinhobl, Ralf Roth and Gunte Publication : [S.l.] Ashgate 2008 . 366 p. ; , Until now, we have only had relatively narrow economic studies comparing investments in railways with investments in other fields of individual economies. 'Across the Borders' not only opens the door for fundamental new insights into a trans-national view of railway history, but also contributes to a break through in the wider study of the subject, providing the first extensive historical investigation of the world wide system of railway financing. This book provides a wide introduction to how financiers, governments and entrepreneurs in Europe managed to face the challenges of constructing and maintaining an integrated railway network, both in their own countries and their colonies. This volume offers analysis from a selection of experts exploring the trans-national investment policies of railway construction based on numerous historical case-studies. The chapters provide insight into the international opportunities that exited for railway financing, from the perspective of economic, social, transport and railway history. With contributions from authors from 19 countries the volume is a truly international work that will be of interest to academic researchers, museum staff, archivists, and anyone who has an interest in the history and development of railways. 24 cm. Federalism, feminism and multilevel governance par Haussman,, Melissa. Publication : [S.l.] Ashgate 2010 . 282 p. , Until recently, few gender scholars took notice of the impact of state architecture on women's representation, political opportunities, and policy achievements. Likewise scholars of federalism, devolution and multilevel governance have largely ignored their gender impact. For the first time, this book explores how women's politics is affected by and affects federalism, whether in Australia, Canada, India, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia or the US. Equally, it assesses the gender implications of devolution and multilevel governance in the European Union, including case studies of the UK and Germany. Globally, multilevel governance is providing new arenas for women's politics. For example, CEDAW (the UN Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women) has led most governments to adopt gender-equality norms while other UN instruments have supported Aboriginal self-government. Gender scholars will find especially valuable what is revealed about the impact of political architecture on a broad range of policy issues, including gay marriage, reproductive rights and childcare. Federalism scholars will benefit from the book's wide range of cases, comparative themes and combination of gender and federalism perspectives. Written by leading experts, this book fills an important gap in both literatures. 24 cm. International criminal justice par Bellelli, Roberto. Publication : [S.l.] Ashgate 2010 . 706 p. , This volume presents an overview of the principle features of the legacy of International Tribunals and an assessment of their impact on the International Criminal Court and on the review of the Rome Statute. It illustrates the foundation of a system of International Criminal Law and Justice, through the case-law and practices of the UN ad hoc tribunals and other internationally assisted tribunals and courts, mainly through contributions of the principals and other officials involved in investigation, prosecution and trials. The challenges of these experiences are underlined with a lesson-learned approach, which provides advice for possible future developments in international criminal procedure and law, with particular reference to their impact on the ICC and on national jurisdictions. The 2010 first Review Conference of the Rome Statute of the ICC is approached as a step of a review process and from the perspective of the developments in the field, since the adoption of the Statute in 1998. Issues addressed are: methodology and scope, procedural and substantive criminal law, and political matters. Leading scholars and States' officials provide their assessment thereof. 25 cm. Non-state actor dynamics in international law : from law-takers to law-makers par Noortmann, Math. Publication : [S.l.] : Ashgate 2010 . 207 p. , Non-state actors have always been treated with ambivalence in the works of international law. While their empirical existence is widely acknowledged and their impact and influence uncontested, non-state actors are still not in the centre of international legal research. The idea that non-state actors are not law-makers, however, stands in sharp contrast with the growing notion of non-state actors as law-takers. This book examines the position of non-state actors in international law as law-makers and law-takers and questions whether these different positions can or should be separated from each other. Each contribution reveals both the political and normative aspects of the question as well as the positivistic possibilities and constraints to accommodate non-state actors as law-takers and law-makers in the contemporary international legal system. Altogether, each expert reveals that the position of non-state actors in international law is not a fixed one but changes with the functional and theoretical perspectives of the observer. "Non-State Actor Dynamics in International Law" is a welcomed addition to an under researched field of legal study. An indispensable read to scholars and policy makers wishing to gain new insights into general discourse on non-state actors in international law and the process of norm formation in the international realm. 24 cm.
